This is the popular brand name of the over the counter generic drug Chlorpheniramine. This medication is a second generation antihistamine. It is used in symptomatic relief of allergy such as colds, allergic coughs, hay fever and allergic rhinitis. Piriton is a common ingredient in over the counter cough medications. Piriton is also used in emergency treatment of anaphylaxis.

Side effects of Piriton

It is used in symptomatic relief of allergy such as colds, allergic coughs, hay fever and allergic rhinitis. Piriton is a common ingredient in over the counter cough medications. Piriton is also used in emergency treatment of anaphylaxis.

This medication is available as tablets as well as syrup form for children. Severities of the side effects are more with children and elderly.

This drug acts by blocking histamine (H1) receptors in the body. It crosses to the brain, so sedation and drowsiness are common side effects. Drowsiness will be tolerable over time.

If you have Kidney diseases, Liver diseases, enlarged prostrate gland, glaucoma, or epilepsy then you should not take this medication without a doctor’s advice. You should not take this if you are pregnant or nursing unless prescribed by a doctor.

Common side effects and advice

Drowsiness is the commonest side effect of piriton. Headache, urinary retention, and blurred vision are also common side effects. Naso pharyngitis, fatigue and dry mouth are common side effects as well. Gastro intestinal disturbances like nausea can occur with some patients. If you are taking piriton, then it is important to avoid operating machinery, driving motor vehicles, and taking excess alcohol or any taking any other CNS depressant drugs.

General advice to avoid side effects

Take this medication only in recommended dosage without exceeding the dose. This medication should be taken with a full glass of water. Do not crush the medication before use. Do not eat high fat meal at the time of taking the drug. High fat meals decreases blood concentration of above medication.

Other side effects that are not so common

Somnolence, fatigue, and reduced energy are reported. Sometimes patients can get low blood pressure, increased heart rate, cardiac rhythm abnormalities, and abnormal movements. Dizziness, confusion, and depression can occur in few patients. Sleep disturbance is another troublesome side effect that can occur rarely. Very rarely patients can get tremors and convulsions (fits).

Rare side effects that are specific to piriton are exforliative dermatitis (skin peeling off), tinnitus, short term blood pressure reduction, and abnormal Central nervous system stimulation.

Usage during Pregnancy

Although there are no evidence of fetal harm, manufacturer advice to avoid during pregnancy. Especially in the first three months.

Usage during Breast feeding

Significant amount is present in breast milk and manufacturer advices to avoid.

Over dose of piriton is usually not dangerous. But excessive sedation can occur.

hi
i used pirton for flu, fo first night, it made me sleep sooner, but in second night, not only did not have sleep but also i could not sleep entire night. just sleeped from 7 to 8 am. it made me worry, so last night i did not use tablet. but i could not sleep entire night again. i am so worry.
do you think it is side effect of drug ??

I had 10 4mgs tablets then underwent a treatment, but after discharging also I feel drowsiness & headache will it long last or will stop after 2,3 weeks?

been using this drug as prescribed by my dr for the past few days and this has made me do nothing but sleep for the entire time. it gets me very drowsy and i fall asleep in minutes for extended periods

Hi,i have cold with watery eyes quite often.Doctor said tat this is allergy no need of taking tablets.But often i am getting cold.I used to take piriton syrup when ever i catcth cold.Kindly give me solutions for my cold.

Piriton caused anaphylaxis in my 1yr old when given to treat mild hives, threw her into shock as soon as it hit the back of her throat, please note that she had been ok with it for a few months

Luckily enough i was given an epipen for an egg allergy, which i had to use
